From age 10 or perhaps earlier, Robert Selders has known he is more than just a survivor. Not just a participant in life, but a major player, Robert has a long list of accomplishments that follow his name. Athlete, student, husband, father, Survivor reality TV show finalist, personal trainer, business owner….Yes, we said Survivor finalist.
Robert, of Garland, Texas, was a finalist for the cast of Survivor 6. “I was a huge Survivor fan then and had already decided what my immunity strategy was going to be,” Robert said. “I just knew I could win it all.” Although he was not chosen as a cast member, Robert said it was a great learning experience, and he was reminded that you should always be yourself no matter what.
Although not many can say they have been a finalist for a reality TV show, not many can say they have accomplished the other things Robert has either. His almost “15 minutes of fame” pales in comparison to his other accolades.
Since the age of 10, Robert has participated in competitive sports. Lettering in football, basketball, baseball, and track in high school then later lettering in football and baseball at the college level, Robert has spent nearly 29 years total either as an athlete playing sports, coaching or training. “Now I mostly play golf and kick around the soccer ball with my three daughters,” he told us.
Playing sports and attending college on full scholarship, Robert struggled to keep his body injury-free his first two years. Tearing his left ACL in the first game of his freshman year, then ending his second season with a torn right ACL, Robert knew his chances of playing professional football were over and doubted if football was the even the right path for him.
So, he did what any injured football player would do, he switched to baseball and earned not only a starting position on his college team, but was also awarded a full scholarship to play. Although he attend professional baseball team workouts, nothing came to fruition and Robert settled for attending graduate school at the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge or the “Olympics of Academia” as Robert calls it.
As though that is not enough accomplishments for one man, Robert later earned a master’s degree in exercise science. After six years a part-time fitness and performance specialist and a successful career as an electrical design engineer, Robert decided to pursue his true passion full-time. Owner of 3Q Fitness Studio, Robert has just recently jumped in to the world of fitness and sports performance business owner. Eleven months ago, he opened the private fitness and performance training and nutrition center dedicated to being the resource for busy business professionals who want fitness, wellness, and performance truth in Garland and the surrounding area. Although business professionals are the studio’s primary market, the studio also serves athletes, mostly female, ranging in age from middle school to college.
I am sure we have not heard the last of Robert Selders. After all, he is more than just a survivor.
Robert holds certifications in Certified Fitness Trainer, ISSA; Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, NSCA; Performance Enhancement Specialist, NASM; CrossFit Level 1 Certification, CrossFit HQ; and he is currently working on Corrective Exercise Specialist, NASM; and Certified Neuromuscular Specialist, FES/Osar Consulting.
In addition to a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Southern University, Baton Rouge, Louisiana (1993) and a master’s in electrical engineering from MIT (1996), Robert also earned a master’s degree in exercise science from California University of Pennsylvania in California, Pennsylvania (2004).
Robert has been married to his lovely wife Keila for 13 years. They have three daughters Myah (8), Nina (5), and Ava (2).
